With Top Gear defensive Driving course we teach you form of training for motor vehicle drivers that goes beyond mastery of the rules of the road and the basic mechanics of driving. Our aim is to reduce the risk of collision by anticipating dangerous situations, despite adverse conditions or the mistakes of others. Our students can achieve this through adherence to a variety of general rules, as well as the practice of specific driving techniques.

Learner licence holders

You’ll be able to attend a defensive driving course once you’ve had your learner licence for four months or have had at least 50 hours driving experience. Doing the course while you have your learner licence will help you pass your restricted licence test as it includes a one-hour in-car session and develops your driving skills.

Restricted licence holders

can attend as soon as they have their restricted licence. If you hold a restricted licence you can attend the course as soon as you get your restricted licence

If you’re over 25, this course will reduce the time on your restricted licence from 6 months to 3 months.

The New Zealand Defensive Driving Course takes just nine hours and instills a lifetime of safer driving strategies for any young driver. The course is run over four sessions of two hours duration — with homework for presentation at the next session — and a one-hour practical in-car session. This intensive interactive course includes both an in-car practical and in-class theory modules. It’s designed for anyone who wants to learn safe driving skills for life.

The NZTA Approved Defensive Driving Course will make you a smarter driver–it gives you the confidence and knowledge to be safer when you’re driving.

You’ll learn defensive driving skills including:

Searching and eye scanning while you drive
Assessing and identifying hazards
Reducing risk - watching out for the factors which cause the most crashes

With Top Gear Driver Training ,Successful completion of the theory and practical components goes part way to completing Unit Standards 3464 and 3465 or 3466.

Course Requirements

If you currently hold a restricted licence you can attend the course as soon as you obtain your restricted licence.
You must bring your licence with you at the commencement of the course
You’ll be able to attend a defensive driving course once you’ve had your learner licence for 4 months .
